He doesn't really grow anythings... he is pretty much retired. As far as sustenance, it is mainly just trying to be less dependant on things like power and water and electricity I guess.

They are obviously the Australian Pelican (Pelecanus conspicillatus), the largest species of pelican in the world.

beautiful pelicans! you're weekly routine is beginning to sound more like Deep Springs than I ever pictured you would be happy with. ;^) http://www.deepsprings.edu/

Did I miss somewhere along the line what Dennis actually grows for sustenance and/or profit? I recall him digging onion weeds and you moving sticks, but are you growing crops or sheep or garden food or what?

And I LOVE the description of your Fridays. The whole step-by-step "routine." (Far from "routine" for all of us up here!) Mmmm, just so rich. (I need to get some new adjectives! But know I mean them!) XOXOX

No way! Your shoulder?!? I don't believe it! Really? That first pic is really beautiful--the lighting and the posture and positions of the pelicans. (Like my unintentional alliteration? ;-)) Any idea what kind of pelicans they are? Besides TALL? XOXOX

Fridays were the day everything got done on Kangaroo Island. Because town was so far away, we only made it in once per week. Denis had the routine down. We woke up and got to work as normal. After lunch we headed into town, and to the library where we used the internet for about an hour. I got emails from a couple of recruiters and found out I had some interviews lined up for when we got back in Melbourne. After an hour at the library we dropped our wash off at the laundromat. While the wash was going we went to the butcher and the grocery store, stocking up for the upcoming week. We finished up at the grocery store just in time for happy hour (actually happy half hour) at the pub. We had a couple of glasses of Cooper's beer, chowed down on the free bar snacks, and then picked up our laundry. Next we filled the car with gas and picked up fish and chips from the local chippie. We took our meal and ate it on the beach, where we saw loads of pelicans. After dinner we headed home with everything we needed to last another week.

Here is another photo I took of some pelicans earlier in the day. I couldn't believe how BIG they were. If I had stood right next to them, they would have come up to about my shoulder.
