We camped for three nights, but only one night at Lake St. Clair. The following nights it warmed up a bit, but also we had gone and bought extra wool socks and an extra blanket from a thrift shop.

I have read somewhere that the Overland Track is rated as one of the top 5 or 10 walks in the world. It starts at Cradle Mountain (more on that later) and goes 80km to Lake St. Clair. Here’s a top 10 walks link:

Granted everyone’s top 10 will be different. I think you see a lot of different things along the walk, and it is through a top-rated world heritage site. Apparently it shares the top rating in the world with a park in China as far as world heritage criteria goes (http://whc.unesco.org/)
I believe part of what makes it so unique is that lots of the plants and trees are extremely old.

Apparently just before we were there they held an annual race where people run the track – with the winner running all 80km in something like 9 hours.

“no need to follow, no need to lead”–that’s been up there a long time, right? I remember seeing something there before–a long time ago–but the font is faint, and I’m usually focused on your text and photos and probably pass right by it. What about it makes it one of the best walks? Did you camp out the whole time or just one or two nights. Doesn’t quite look like Lake St. Clair around here!

We spent the night in Lake Saint Clair National Park. Being the middle of summer we weren’t really thinking that it was going to be cold, but it got down to just about freezing and we were definitely cold in the tent. Lake Saint Clair is the final leg of the Overland Track, one of the best multi-day walks in the world.
