Wow! Awesome! Sounds like it felt kind of lonely, or something, there. Just the awesomeness of the vast space in front of you. I've read about sailors in the southern ocean between NZ and SAm and how it's the place on earth where you're farthest from anything. Or maybe fartherest. ;^) Looks like a great place to camp. I bet the stars were something!! HAve you seen any good meteors?

Didn't see any boats... probably because there is no town or anything for quite a while.

Absolutely beautiful! And it's marked in my atlas. What a gorgeous place! I can imagine sitting on the beach just staring out at the water. Were there many boats or ships in the area? What kind? The air must be very refreshing--and sure pure.

We stayed at a campground at the tip of the north island. It was really nice, with a great view of the sea. In the morning we woke up and hiked down to the beach of Cape Maria Van Diemen, pictured above (Named by Abel Tasman after one of his mate's wives). This cape is directly to the west of Cape Reinga, and is to date the most beautiful beach I have seen in New Zealand or elsewhere. It was also cool to swim in the water, knowing that in front of you was nothing but ocean for thousands of miles.
