Lots of the houses reminded me of some of the older houses in Minneapolis. Not sure why, but that is what came to mind. Most of the wine is from Hawkes Bay (north east of Wellington) or Marlborough (north of south island). I'm not sure what makes it so good. I think a lot of it is from the volcanic soil, and I guess the climate is good for growing grapes. Not sure if I have any botanical garden pics... I will take a look. Wellington is the capitol of New Zealand (we saw parliament), and is known for being extremely windy, as the mountains form a wind tunnel. All the wind is forced through the channel between the north and south islands. Luckily for us, the weather was beautiful. While we were there it was warm and sunny with virtually no wind. Wellington is the second largest city in New Zealand with 400,000 people. Downtown was pretty compact, but felt like a big city when you were down there. Tons of shops, restaurants, etc. The city is surrounded by hills/mountains with lots of houses up there. We took the cable car pictured above to the top of one of the hills where there is a university, and botanical gardens. We strolled through the gardens on our way back into the city, and then spent the day hanging out in town.
