I think either word is correct. The point is that I learned that "homely" had several meanings.

I just meant that it felt homey I guess... but I typed it homely :).

It wasn't flat around Greymouth. It is right near mountains and stuff, but the city is flat I guess. That photo is taken towards the ocean I think. If you were to turn around, you would see mountains.

I've enjoyed the photos and descriptions of the Pancake Rocks and Greymouth. They're both in my book. The formation of the Pancake Rocks reminds me a lot of the Grand Canyon, but the striation is so much more defined and horizontal. So interesting! I was curious about your use of the word "homely" to describe the Global Village hostel. At first I thought you really meant to say "homey" (as in "homelike atmosphere"), but then in my dictionary I found one of the definitions of "homely" is "being something familiar with which one is at home." So...bottom line...the two words can mean the same thing. I just didn't want the Global Village people to think they were being referred to as "plain or unattractive in appearance," probably the way we've often used the word "homely." So I learned something besides geography, travel and culture.

The waters look very calm. Everything is lovely and looks like tourism postcards.

Greymouth looks like it's about to get overflowed by the river. Is it really flat there? Most of NZ has seemed pretty hilly or mountainous but that pic looks different.

Continuing south, we stopped in Greymouth for a couple of days to catch our breath, after being on the move for a while. We stayed at Global Village, which is one of the top rated BBH hostels in the country. It was extremely homely, and we enjoyed having a relaxed few days before getting back on the road.

While in Greymouth we went on a bike ride to a nice scenic walk, spent time reading, got a bunch of work done, and got to tour the Monteith's brewery, which brews some of our favorite New Zealand beer. Tomorrow we are going on an all day guided hike on Fox Glacier.
