But we did see some at a place we stopped earlier. Basically waves crashed in and water was forced up and out of the rocks. No blowholes here, as we were here at low tide. Cool looking. I'm wondering what the mystery is about them... What a trip! I found more pictures online - did you see any blowholes while you were there? Were the waves big enough? There was a walkway leading out to the water and the rocks. The rocks were made of limestone, and appeared to be in layers like stacked pancakes. According to the signs there, even scientists don't know how these rocks got like this. The entire area was extremely beautiful, and the west coast in general has been awesome to see. It is made up of huge, rocky cliffs and lots of rock formations in the sea. The beaches are mostly rocky with big, powerful waves. Heading south on the west coast, we stopped in the small town of Punakaiki to visit the Pancake Rocks shown above. There was a walkway leading out to the water and the rocks.
