Yes it is a bit like that Clara. However it’s also nice and scenic, and when you are in a place that is hot and sticky already, you appreciate having a bit of water to soak in and cool down.

The Mekong forms a large part of the Thai/Laos border.

I’ve always just thought of the Mekong River (or more specifically the Mekong Delta, which would be further south) as a really hot, humid place with lots of bugs.

I have a post coming up in a couple of days about food. In general Laos has some traditional dishes, but most every place had “western” and Thai food on the menu.

No I don’t really like it hot and humid. But it’s a good excuse to go for a swim, and stay in the room from about 12pm-3pm reading.

So . . . do you like it that hot and humid? I remember Nanna once saying (and I’m sure Grandpa Deane agreed) that there are times when a cold, cold beer perfectly hits the spot. (But yours was “almost cold.”) Come to think of it, I’m not sure I remember Nanna drinking beer. Maybe she did and I’m just forgetting–maybe she was just speaking about Grandpa Deane. I think it was on a hot summer day when he came in from the field. And Iowa in the summer can be insufferably humid!) $1, eh? Awesome! And I liked Clara’s and Gunder’s comments, too. And am curious with Dadman, too. XOXOX

You’re in the tropics, so a cold beer seems appropriate. Your latitude is about the same as Cuba or Miami, Florida. Can you imagine how the American soldiers felt in the constant heat and humidity 40 years ago? Thanks for your photo of the Laos countryside, along your description of your trip from Bangkok to Vientiane. I’m following you on my map. Thanks, too, for the explanation about the UXOs.

Laos is really hot. And humid. What better way to cool off than with an almost cold Beer Lao, the national beer. The big beer above costs about $1 US. The photo was taken in Vientiane, eating beside the Mekong River.
