We saw it when we were there. For the most part it seems peaceful - lots of people in red shirts standing around, blocking some roads and such - but there has been some violence directed towards the current Prime Minister. Luckily we got out of town before they shut down the airport or anything (this happened last time there were protests in December). Yes there is lots of protesting going on in Bangkok now. We had an excellent week lazing around on the beach and in hammocks, and hanging out with a Swedish couple we met in the back of a truck taxi. However, sadly it came time to leave. We took a 1 hour boat taxi to Ko Tao, a much smaller island just north of Ko Phangan. Ko Tao is known for incredible snorkeling and diving as it is surrounded by an huge reef system.
