All over the place there are temples. And I think in or around each temple lives a bunch of monks. These monks could talk and such. There must be some distinction but I'm not sure what it was. Mostly they are just walking around in their orange robes when I see them. I think they might have day jobs? Some monks brew beer :). Also they clean the temples and things. In the first photo here there were some older monks taking a bunch of kid monks on a tour of Wat Pho.

There are lots of farang (Thai for white foreigner) around. However it's hard to tell who are the expats and who are just traveling around.

46 meters long and 15 meters high?!? That's one, big Buddha!

Lots of monks? Kid monks? Maybe I don't know what a monk is--at least in the Thai culture. Usually, I think of only a few and way off isolated by themselves somewhere. And in neutral colors--not oranges, etc. Any more explanations?

That Buddha - he looks pretty relaxed. Any idea what the monks do all day? What are they up to when you see them? Or are they just going about like everyone else but dressed up like monks?

Do you meet any other americans around there? Or see signs of all the military people who were there during the 60s-70s? Old ex-patriots lounging around running bars or something?

Yes there are monks all over the place. Lots of young kid monks too. I'm not sure what that buddha is made of, but many are made of gold.

I wasn't able to get online to comment about this when it was posted, but we really went to see the BIG reclining Buddha at Wat Pho (Bangkok). This Buddha is 46m long x 15m high:

What do you suppose the statue is made of? Unfamiliar colors, textures, etc. to me in the medium, but still rich and interesting. Glad you posted it. My favorite part is the monks. Would be fascinating to observe them--to "monk watch" without their knowing. ;-)
