Rows of chardonnay grapes at Currawong Organic Vineyard – Adelaide Hills, Australia

Situated in the Adelaide Hills, Currawong Organic Vineyard and Winery is possibly one of Australia’s smallest vineyards. Vines cover one acre of scenic hillside, with 2/3 being Chardonnay and the other 1/3 pinot.

In the mornings Beth and I work for about 4-5 hours, mainly spreading the mulch you see on the rows above. So far the work hasn’t been bad. I actually kind of enjoy it. I put an audio book on my iPod and zone out. I am currently listening to Blaze the newest Richard Bachman/Stephen King book. I had wanted to buy this book for some time, but it is just too expensive to buy books on this side of the world, about $32 USD for the 300 page paperback.

In the afternoons we relax or go for a walk around the picturesque Adelaide Hills, where I saw my first kangaroo the other day. We stay in a cozy guest house and eat meals with the family – Richard, Sue, and their son Rob who is about our age. There is no shortage of tastey wine, both Currawong and other local varieties. Rob has a passion for beer brewing, and his brews are quite good as well. The estate is also home to six sheep (there used to be more but Beth ate one last night), and some chickens who provide us with eggs every day.

All in all we are really enjoying our first WWOOFing experience, working with our hands and living with a local family as we experience the Australian culture and learn more about organic farming practices. Sometimes when I am working in the field I think of my father out in the garden, a place I remember seeing him often as a child.

This is so interesting, not only the work you’re doing but also the concept of WWOOFing. Yes, I explored the Internet for more information about it. What a neat idea! You’re doing different kind of work, enjoying the family with whom you’re staying, and experiencing the Australian countryside. The photos are neat, too. 15K pushing a wheelbarrow would be exercise!

Nice pics! Sounds like a decent way to live. Glad you’re enjoying the experience with the family. I did finally buy some New Zealand wine the other day. Dr. Campbell (dentist) recommended it. “Kim Crawford” is the vintner. What kind of food are they feeding you, besides sheep and wine? You missed getting a picture of the kangaroo? How big was it?

Never heard of Kim Crawford. What region is it from? I will post some photos of roos in a day or two. Right now I don’t have Internet. The roo I saw that day was pretty big… Maybe 5 feet tall or so.

The food has been good, a lamb they raised, some Thai currie, eggs from the farm, etc.
