In front of our house on Kangaroo Island (KI) is a salt lake. It was mined heavily for salt back in the day. Half was mined and half was not. In the photo above you can see the difference. On the right you have deep blue water that was mined heavily. On the left you have shallow muddy water. At some point they stopped mining. You can still find remnants of the old mines and the mining camps left behind. I can only assume this fence is one of them.

Very interesting.

so how is there a salt lake there? I thought those were in desert areas. Or is it like a lake on top of a salt deposit? The lake is right in front of the house? Maybe you could put up a pic that shows the perspective of the lake and the house. Thanks!! Looks like an interesting place to be!

salt lake

Here is a photo of the house accross the salt lake. I guess before they started mining it was a boggy marsh or something. Then they started mining and it filled up with water like a gravel pit would – salty water though.

I read in a South Australia newspaper how salt is becoming a real problem. Because so much land has been cleared for farming over the years, now the water table is much higher than it used to be, causing salt to come to the surface and accumulate above ground. There is no way to really get rid of it, and it makes the land useless for most plants and animals.

Is the white stuff lining the edge of the beach (visible in both photos) salt or simply natural beach foam?

That’s just foam, not salt.
