After a pleasant lunch and Hanson Bay, the Grand Tour of Kangaroo Island took us to Flinder’s Chase National Park. In the parking lot of the visitor’s center we saw several koalas (no they are not bears) up in the trees. From what I can tell, they just go high up in trees and sleep all the time. I have yet to see one move.

I haven’t heard them make noise either. However, Richard from Adelaide Hills informed us that it sounds like a cross between a pig and a motor bike. I wish I had heard one so I could compare the actual sound to that description. On one hand the description makes total sense what one must sound like, but on the other hand I just think ‘whhaaaa???’

Here is a different one:

Awesome! Koalas in the wild. I remember seeing them in the Toledo zoo and being totally fascinated by them. Not that they were doing anything then, either…

Wow, you actually saw that! And like Dad said, in the wild! How *very* cool for you. (I had to force myself to change one exclamation point to a period. ;-) Hard to do when feeling exclamatory. ;-) ) Nice thing about them sleeping is that you don’t have only mere seconds to capture a pose! :-) And how awesome that you had the tour guides of tour guides–a K.I. resident to show you the best of the best. Just so cool–such rich experiences, pictures, and memories. Mmmmmmm. XOXOXO

These photos are fun. It’s interesting that you say they didn’t move or make noise. I’d wondered if they seemed playful. Not if they silent and not moving. I can’t tell how big these koalas are.

I’m glad you said they are not bears. I would have been thinking, “Gee, they don’t even look like bears!”

When you mentioned about the eucalyptus tree it made me think of a gift shop that used to be in Rolfe and they used to sell eucalyptus branches for decorating purposes. I just never knew where that kind of tree grew. (For Clara and Peggy, that was the Gift Galley, Helen Phillips’ store…in case you didn’t recall.)

Thank you for sharing. I almost feel like I’m on vacation looking at your photos and reading your descriptions. Well, not *that* close to feeling on vacation, but I’m glad I get to experience it through you.

Ok, I see what you’re saying about them being boring but they’re so cute!
