I haven’t posted for a while. I know that is becoming a trend, but I will try to post a bit more frequently. We’ll see :) .

Mario has come to downtown Melbourne (above) and brought his friends. The Australian Center for the Moving Image has a huge video game exhibit on for the next several months called Game On. It was awesome. You walk in and are greeted with an original Pong game (I’ve got Hal’s attention). You then walk around and see the evolution of video games, seeing console after console in cronological order. Every console is running with one of its games and you can play whatever you like.

After that there are loads of full arcade games and hundreds more games from various systems, years, and genres to try your hand at. You basically end up walking around these big rooms playing a different game every 5 minutes for a couple of hours. You then feel a bit overloaded and go home :) .

A Drupal development team ( Lullabot ) from North America had been in town doing some training. My company and boss helped to arrange the thing, so I got to sit in on some of the training, and meet some interesting people. Thursday night we took them to Game On and everyone had a great time. I may go back for a full day before the exhibit checks out in July.

Here’s a bit more info on Game On:

Hi Josh,

All I can say is “Wow!” I’m not even a fan of video games but I think the exhibit looks so intriguing. It seems like something that would be on many American’s “wish list” to see. I looked briefly at the different game explanations at the link you sent, and will look more carefully/thoroughly later. I’ll be sure to show the exhibit site to Bill, too.

Oops! “Americans’”

This was fun. I made sure Hal read your post. (Do you actually remember Pong?) For someone who loves games, this must have been a real treat for you–both the training and the games, so many of them. What is Beth doing these days? I presume working–doing what?

Of course I remember Pong… but not from when it was originally released :) .

Oh you asked about Beth. She is unfortunately still waiting on work visa approval. I am sponsoring her as my “de facto spouse” so that she can work, but the visa application has taken a ridiculously long time to get through all the red tape. We are hoping it will be approved this week some time.

Very nice photo above…everything exposed well despite being later in the evening.

I can’t help but wonder what would happen if an oversized Mario ran amok, Godzilla style, throwing fireballs around and smashing bricks.

The video game thing sounds really cool. Bethany filled me in on some details in an email. The evolution of the video game is pretty interesting. Lots of games from the early 80s had a bunch of bizarre ideas for a game…I guess they were a lot of evolutionary dead ends so to speak before fighting games and racing games started dominating everything.

Hey that would be crazy if a “super” Mario (hehe) ran amok in downtown Melbourne! We’d have to get a Donkey Kong to drop some oversized barrels on him.

I now have my visa! I better get busy looking for a job…

Congrats on the visa, Beth!! Good luck on a good job! – Jeff

Glad you got your visa Beth! Good luck with the job search! How is the economy there…is it easy to find a job?

Also, Josh, I enjoyed this picture immensely.

I’m glad for you, Beth. Having the visa is one hurdle you’re over. Good luck on the job search.
