First about the photo:
Back before the holidays Beth and I rented a car to drive from Adelaide to Melbourne via the Great Ocean Road, 270km of winding coastal road along southern Victoria running from Torquay to Geelong (almost Melbourne). We had been wanting to take this drive for some time, and it refused to disappointed. We spent three days seeing spectacular sight after spectacular site. I have been holding the series of photographs back because I wanted to make sure I had enough days/time to do it justice. Over the next couple of weeks I will be posting some of the best photos from our Great Ocean Road drive. Hope you like :) . This first one is a typical view from B100, The Great Ocean Road.

Now a bit about life:
Whew, it has been ages since I last posted. There has been a large combination of craziness going on. I have been working like a fool, as well as trying to sort out a place to live and various other things that go along with relocation.

Melbourne is bustling. The Aussie Millions poker tournament is going on at the Crown Casino (biggest in the southern hemisphere). This is one of the biggest tournaments in the world and all the best poker players are here. I got to go watch a bit the other day, and happened to run into a guy (Jon Turner) I used to play cards with at NC State, who is now a pro living in Vegas. He’s doing quite well in the main event, which is a 10k buy-in event going on now.

Next door to the Crown Casino the Australian Open is going on. If you don’t know, this is one of the four Grand Slam tennis events with the top ranked players from around the world. If you have seen tennis on TV or in the news over the last week it is happening in Melbourne.

Beth is still in the USA but is getting back tomorrow. Tomorrow will be a crazy day indeed. My schedule looks like this: 9am pick up keys to new apartment, 10am pick up rental truck, 11am pick up Beth at airport, head to Ikea to get some cheap furniture, pick up fridge I bought on ebay (apartments don’t come with those here!), head to our friend’s house and pick up all our stuff that is there, go to our apartment and move in, and finally try to get in a bit of relaxation on the beach before passing out from exhaustion.

It will be wonderful to finally have a place. It has been fun staying with our friends Kelly and Tristan, but the time has come to stop sleeping on the floor and have some space of our own. I picked out a quaint two-bedroom in the southern Melbourne suburbs. Hopefully it will be nice. I can’t quite remember what it’s like exactly. Rent here is extremely cheap compared to buying a place. Not quite sure why. A place that would rent for 1k/month would cost 400k to purchase. I’m not quite sure why you would want to buy at those prices. There are loads of homes that are nice, but nothing fancy, going for well over 1.5m.

Okay, enough. I will be posting more regularly over the next couple weeks as I have all the photos lined up and ready to go.

Glad to see a new picture up! Sounds like a fantastic drive along the coast. Wow! Be nice to see pics of your new house when you get moved in and rested up a bit. Funny about meeting your friend at the tournament. Was he winning big? That’s quite a way to make a living.

It’s good to hear from you again. Actually, as I’ve been on the treadmill I’ve watched some of the Australian Open and have thought of you.

The Great Ocean Road photo is lovely. I found the road in my travel book, but haven’t yet put the atlas and travel book together to figure things out for sure. It’s nice that Beth is back with you.

You apartment sounds very comfortable. How far is it from your job? In what section of Melbourne is your apartment? I’ll try to find it on the map. You mentioned renting a truck. Was that for moving things into your apartment? Or is it your means of travel for your time in Melbourne?

Have a wonderful time.

Jon wasn’t winning big. Sounded like he wasn’t getting many cards. Luckily he won his way in and didn’t pay 10k to enter.

The new place is great. We are in Parkdale, which is a southern bayside suburb of Melbourne. It is just a ten minute trian ride to work which is awesome compared to the hour+ I was facing before. The commute was long mainly because I had to take 2 different transport methods, with a wait in between.

I will put some pics of the new place and area up in a while. I need to get my camera fixed first as there is something on the sensor causing artifacts to show up on the photos.
