Beth found out about the Melbourne Bushwalkers Club, and we went with them on a Sunday walk in Torquay – about 100km west of Melbourne. We paid a fee and took a group bus to Bells Beach at Torquay. Rip Curl was putting on an international surf contest, which we got to watch for a bit, then we walked quite a ways along the beach, ending up at the point you see in this photograph.

The walk back was inland, and not nearly as cruisy. We had to climb a massive hill, and it was about the hottest day of the summer. The temperature was something like 38C (100F), and the sun made it seem even hotter. We were all glad to get back to the air conditioned bus and head back to Melbourne.

Beautiful picture! I can’t imagine doing climbing in that kind of heat.

Happy Opening Day! Jonesie is on the mound with a tied game at the top of the 9th…I’m nervous. Looking forward to seeing you in May…say hi to Beth for me!

Looks delightful. 100 degrees sounds pretty sweet right now…the southeast is in a cold snap. (High 45?? At the end of March? Ridiculous.)

The beach is lovely. The colors and composition of your photo is great. I actually found Bells Beach on a map. What fun to take the bus and walk back. I know you were exhausted by the end of the day, but what a fantastic and exhilarating experience the walk must have been.

100 degrees and a beach sounds pretty good to me! Looks pretty good in your picture, too! Maybe it would heat up the Tigers.

I’m sorry I haven’t written, Josh. :-( Very bad. I actually check you site every day if not even more. Just goofy about writing. But I especially love the post showing where you live–inside, outside close, and outside farther. What a wonderful set-up. Even though you feel like a “9-5 drone” (do yo still?), you have this smartly chosen place to come home to. Very nice that you’re on the secnd floor and have a balcony. Extremely nice that you’re just an 8-minute walk from the train. (I forget–you do still have a vehicle, right? But, nice that you let the train do the traffic and gas hassling for you!) I love the interior shot. Your place is simple but very pleasant. How did you get your accessories (like the rug, lamp, framed items on mantle, etc.)? And is that a fireplace? A working one? The best part of all (for me it would be, at least) is getting to wake up in the morning and hear the waves out your window (if it’s open during the blazing hot and frigid cold months, of course!). I love that about “my” little cabin up here. And that you can go on either the upper or lower walk for miles in either direction. And see a different sunset every night. Amazing. You were smart to pick a place where you can just sort of put work behind you and sort of rejuvenate. At least that’s what I imagine, but maybe it isn’t really that way? What *is* it like? THANKS SO MUCH for letting us see. I’m so grateful. Your posts help me not feel so far from you. XOXOX

Hi Mother,
You don’t need to apologize for not writing. It’s not your responsibility :) . I have been bad as well. I keep meaning to post photos, but for some reason I keep not doing it. I have been pretty busy I guess. Nothing out of the norm, just lots of normal life stuff keeping me from the computer (Beth might say otherwise. She thinks I spend my entire life at the computer).

We do not have a vehicle. We rely 100% on public transport. Well okay maybe like 99% because occasionally we get a ride from a friend. Today my friend Dan took me to pick up a computer I bought through Ebay. Sadly we had to leave the van in New Zealand. We would like to get a van or car here, but they are rather expensive.

The “accessories” you ask about in our flat were mostly here when we moved here. Just a few basic things like that lamp and the rug etc. We did a big Ikea run as well, and bought lots of furniture in one go. The thing that looks like a fireplace is just a gas heater, although they seem to do them up like fire places here. Make them the central warming spot for the living room and the whole house, I guess.

And I guess it is sort of like that. We really like the area we live in :) . Now off to post a new photo. Bout time.
