The other day, Beth and I decided to take a trip to the Auckland Zoo. The zoo wasn’t huge, and could easily be done in an afternoon. There were lots of the usual things you would see at a zoo… namely animals. There was a very nice native bird aviary where you could go and be up close with the local birds that you might not see flying around Auckland. There were also tigers, hippos, elephants, giraffes, and an open air Australian terrain with emus and wallabies running around.

One of the highlights was going into the kiwi house, and seeing kiwi birds running around. They are nocturnal, flightless, blind birds, so zoo protection is their only real means of survival. When we were there, the two kiwi birds were fairly active. Last time we were at a kiwi house, they barely moved.

All in all, it was a fun day and worth a visit if you are in Auckland.

Wow, he’s a big, happy dude! ;-) That’s quite the bib he’s wearing! Fun to think of you guys going to the zoo. And getting such a great, close-up photo. Were you really *that* close, or did you have a pretty good zoom? I see Dad has on the TV here in his office, set to the MSU-UNC game. Second quarter. I’ll keep you in suspense about the score. Hehehe. !XOXOX!

We were that close. My zoom isn’t very good as I only have the standard lense that came with my camera. It isn’t very good.

I am “watching” the game on game-cast. I am really missing being home right now, with all the sports I want to be watching.

This bird is so cute. What size do you think it was–maybe compared to a robin?

I would say the bird is the size of a few robins. haha. Maybe a bit bigger than a normal pidgeon.
