Since there were four of us on the island now, renting a car seemed like a better idea than hitchhiking around the island. There was cheap rental car place in Claris and we got a Mazda 121 with a fun top (sunroof type thing) that had seen long life of driving around the beat up roads of Great Barrier Island.

We drove all around the island, and stopped for an afternoon at Harataonga Bay. The beach was beautiful, with great waves, and we had it to ourselves for most of the afternoon.

Strangely enough, right off the beach were a bunch of newly built Robinson-Caruso-just-won-the-lottery looking buildings. As it turns out, a British, Survivor-like “reality” show called Castaway is being filmed on Great Barrier, just off of Harataonga Bay, complete with pre-fab shipwrecks and huge generators powering the set. It seemed rather ironic that they were filming this supposed “reality” show on Great Barrier, no doubt highlighting the difficulties of living on a deserted island, but at the same time the cast was probably living in more luxury than most of the locals, and the set was using more power than the rest of the island combined. Castaway will be shown internationally on BBC in the next few months if you are intersted in checking out some footage of Great Barrier, and the hardships of island life when your makeup artist must rely on generator power :) .

There is actually a pretty cool photo of Harataonga Bay that I just found on the Castaway website.
