Hawkes Bay is known for having some of the best wine in New Zealand. Our second day in Napier, we decided to visit a couple of wineries.
The first we went to was Mission Estate, the oldest winery in New Zealand. They are located on Church Road outside of downtown Napier. We had a great lunch (I had lamb bottom) and sampled several of their wines. Sheryl ended up buying several bottles. They were all very good.
We then headed down the road to a much smaller winery and vineyard, Moana Park. The wine there was equally as good (awarded best Syrah under $30, which we bought), and we did our tasting just a few feet away from the vines. Sheryl bought some more bottles here, and I got a bottle of their desert “ice wine.”
There are enough wineries in the region to taste for weeks, but we only made it to two. However, we have enough wine in the van to last us for quite some time. Unfortunately, we have to finish it before Sheryl goes home next week .
What a scenic, delicous experience! Wine tasting right by the vines of the oldest vineyard in a country purportedly having the best wines in the world! If your text becomes “slurred” in the next few days, we’ll know why! XOXOX
This photo looks like a postcard. You do have an excellent eye for composition. At first glance, I thought the trees had fruit on them. Then I realized the climate now in NZ is similar to our mid-October and that the trees are turning colors. Beautiful.
I’ve been following your travels along the east coast. Everything is so lovely. And you’re seeing quite a variety of things. Will you take a ferry from Wellington? When do you anticipate getting to the south island? And then to Queenstown?
Thanks Clara. Funny you ask about the ferry, as we are about to leave to take it to Picton this morning. I am a day or two behind on the postings. We will be in the south island this afternoon.
