After waking up at the holiday park in Leigh to the sound of free range roosters, we headed north. We stopped in Whangarei on the way up – a coastal town on the east coast of New Zealand northland. Not much to write about there, just grabbed some coffee and a breakfast pie and continued north.

Just an hour or so north was Paihia, our destination. Paihia is a little coastal town with a relaxing beach vibe, situated right at the heart of the Bay of Islands. The Bay of Islands is a bay consisting of about 120 islands of varying size. It is extremely beautiful, with lots of touristy type water activities to do, like parasailing, charter fishing, sailing, horseback riding, diving, etc.

A friend recently sent me an article with top honeymoon destinations around the world. A place in Bay of Islands ranked #7: http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2007/pf/0703/gallery.honeymoon_hotspots.moneymag/7.html
Note: Bora Bora was also on the list, another place I have been this past year :D .

We drove around Paihia, checked out some waterfalls, saw a really beautiful golf course overlooking the bay, and then headed to the holiday park just south of town. It was pretty nice, right on the water with a good view of the sunset and lots of good fishing. Unfortunatly my fishing gear was at home. Or perhaps I should say fortunately my gear was at home, so I didn’t spend a frustrating day losing hooks and catching no fish.

I found Bay of Islands in my atlas and had to resort to Internet maps to find Paihia. The descriptions sound so interesting and quaint. Captain Cook named the region “Bay of Islands.”
