The other weekend a friend called up and asked if I wanted to head to Raglan with him for some surf. I hadn’t been surfing yet in New Zealand and had been wanting to try out the waves. We headed down Saturday morning, and set up camp at the Raglan Holiday Park.
I have been wanting to try surfing a long board, so in town I rented a 9 foot board and we headed to Wainui Beach. Raglan is one of the best surfing spots in New Zealand and the world, and Wainui Beach is the first beach you find when heading out of town. It has sandy beaches and a nice easy break. The parking lot is located up a hill from the beach, with beautiful views overlooking the beach and the ocean.
We surfed Saturday and Sunday, and by the time my arms were about to fall off I had started to get a hang of the long board. It was so much bigger than what I am used to, it seemed like I was surfing a kitchen table. It was easier to padle than a shorter board, and you could stand up on it without much of a push from a wave. The waves were Okay, but not great. At least they weren’t great for New Zealand. They were incredible compared to the waves of North Carolina’s east coast.
These photos are so beautiful. Must be paradise. The other night we watched “South Pacific” on the PBS “Great Performances.” The photos you’re sending must be what those sailors saw in the South Pacific during WWII. And what a wonderful weekend you had surfing. How neat that you got to do that.
