We had only a couple of days to get from Wellington to Auckland. We headed for Taranaki, about half way up on the west coast. It is one of the only places we didn’t get to visit on the North Island when we traveled down.

Taranaki is a large round peninsula with Mount Taranaki in the middle of it. The entire peninsula is circled by the Surf Highway. Every few kilometers there is a surf beach turnoff. We found a deserted beach and parked the van. We had an interesting run in with some locals, and then a good nights sleep with the sound of surf in the background.

In the morning we headed north and took a turnoff to see the Whitecliffs (above), and also a rock formation called The Three Sisters.

The nature on this side of the North Island was really raw and beautiful. It made for some nice photos. There’s not a lot of story or anything of note about the area or the photos. I will let them speak for themselves.

We did find a Whitecliffs organic brewery on our way out of town. They were putting on a beer fest. Their ale was very good.

I’ve enjoyed your descriptions and photos from Windy Wellington and think these photos from Taranaki are wonderful–so crisp and clear and artistic. You’re about to leave NZ and fly to Australia. We’re looking forward to your posts from there.
