I don’t post a whole lot of people photos, but I thought this one of Beth and I was pretty good. We arrived in Nelson the other day, and have been laying low and resting after a couple of weeks of non-stop driving on our way to the South Island.

Nelson is a large town of 55,000 people located in the very center of New Zealand. It is the sun capital of New Zealand, getting more hours of sunshine (~2400/year) than any other place in the country. This is due to it’s location between two mountains lines. The town itself is very friendly, with everything you would need (shops, restaurants, etc.) but fairly compact. There is a large artist community here, making for nice culture and friendly people.

The photo above is from Tahuna Beach, just outside the town of Nelson. You can see some of the sprawling town on the mountainside in the background. Further on past that is the town center. We are staying in a cabin just off this beach.

Nice photo. It’s fun to see the two of you together against such a nice backdrop.

Tonight when we went to Barnes & Noble (to find an SQL Server 2005 book), I picked out a nice travel book on New Zealand–one with lots of pictures, diagrams and descriptions. So I’ve read more about Marlborough Sound, Nelson and Abel Tasman. As I’ve leafed through the pages, I’ve seen photos similar to those you’ve sent and read about lots of places you’ve described. I’m looking forward to following your journey in this book for the next several months, too.

It never looks crowded in NZ. That must be kind of a nice feeling. A cabin on the beach. Nice.

Nope, never too crowded here. Exp now after summer is over.

Sounds neat about your book Clara. I’m sure there are lots of beautiful photos, much nicer than I could take.

We are staying at a place called “the barn” tonight, just outside of Abel Tasman National Park. I don’t have internet on my laptop, or I would post a picture. We leave in the morning on a 5 day coastal trek. It should be really cool. But I will not be around for a while, so talk to you all next week!

Back from our Abel Tasman trek. It was awesome! Will post about it later when I have some time. Hopefully tonight. Debating if I should put it all into one post, or split it up into days.

I was just wondering if you were coming back soon. Looking forward to pictures and descriptions!

Love it. Looks like you’re having a wonderful time. You should frame this one!

Also, I should have mentioned this in the last comment, but I heard on the radio that there is a hill in New Zealand called Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu. I think this is a fantastic name and when I heard it, I thought of you and Beth on your travels.

I think I heard that Claire, although I wasn’t sure how to spell it :) .

Finally got an internet connection! I have been trying to post an update for days.
