Friday was the opening night of Night Ski at Coronet Peak. To celebrate the event, there was a “Rail Jam” competition as part of the Winter Festival. Competitors had three large rails and were judged by their performance on all three.

It was pretty fun. I headed up to the mountain with my friend Rob and we snowboarded for a couple of hours, then sat on the “sun” deck (it was overcast and raining), listening to the DJ spin music and watching competitors for a couple of hours. After the competition, the ski field was open for night skiing.

The only problem was that the weather turned warm. It was actually raining the entire day. We got soaked, but the snow wasn’t bad. Slush beats ice. Also there was hardly anyone else on the mountain, so that was great. Normally the runs are packed with people, most of them falling over, and you have to spend more time weaving in and out of them than actually enjoying your own run.

With the warm weather, lots of the snow has been melting and the mountain has actually been closed the last couple of days. It has been a bit of a bummer, but it is getting cold again, and snow is in the forecast for the next several days.

Note: My blue snowboard made it into the photo above :) .

On to more important things, the website is back up after some downtime. Some of you may have noticed. I was moving the site to a new web host, and there were a few problems with the transition. It seems as if Queenstown is the last place on earth to get their DNS refreshed. If you don’t know what that means, don’t worry about it. Things should be back to normal now.

Just like Omaha, there are some unusually warm days in the middle of winter. Hopefully, it’s snowing again soon. Before I read the caption, I thought you were going to say you were the person at the top of the rail. Not! I presume you had to rent or purchase your snowboard for the season after you got to Queenstown and that you did not bring with you from the states.

They are um… being developed.

We bought our boards while we were in Auckland, and have both had to get new bindings here in Queenstown.

Not just the pics?! Probably your rail skills, too!
