Ohau ski field (pronounced oh how) is located on Lake Ohau about three hours north of Queenstown. It is a small, family owned ski field with one two seater chair lift and an extremely relaxed atmosphere. Their slogan is “Ohau I Love to Ride,” or “Ohau I Love to Ski” depending on your preference.

We had been talking about a trip to Ohau for some time, and set off in the van Wednesday morning. The drive was beautiful, as are most drives in this country, and we got to the ski field around noon. We were greeted with some chilled out reggae from the PA and a quiet ski field with parking for only about 50 cars.

All in all, we spent three days riding at Ohau and camping on the shores of the lake with three friends and their vans. It was a great break from the business of Queenstown and the packed slopes of Coronet and Remarkables. It was also good to be in the van again, and camping for free in beautiful places.

This is the view from one of our awesome camping spots at the foot of the mountain.

Looks amazing! Looking closely at the ski lift on the right…it doesn’t seem like it was even that crowded. I’m sure camping was fun as well…was it cold?

Amazingly it was warm camping. Pretty fun camping in the warm, and then driving up the mountain and riding in the snow. And you are right, hardly anyone was there which made it awesome.

Looks great! Was there anyone else on the slopes but you and your friends?
