Jon and I spent a day driving through the Catlins, a scenic coastal area on the south-east coast of New Zealand. The road through the Catlins is just under 200km long. However, the road is not along the coast, so we took several turnoffs to see things like Nugget Point, shown above.

Nugget Point is home to the world’s southern-most lighthouse, and a group of large rocks for which the area was named. Supposedly they look like large gold nuggets. The scenery was breathtaking, with huge waves, steep cliffs, and fresh air.

After a long day of driving with lots of cool stop offs, we pulled into Curio Bay Backpackers for the night. It wasn’t so much a backpacker, but a small beach house, with waves crashing in the back yard. We had a relaxed evening, and a good night sleep. We even saw some penguins.

Ohhhhhh, my gosh. That is one of the coolest photos and one of the coolest places I have ever seen. And to think you and Jon were there! How awesome to capture it on “film.” (Though I imagine even a great photo doesn’t do justice to how amazing it was in person?) And that’s got to be one of the best feelings and experiences in the world–to sleep at the bottom of NZ, in a small beach house, with waves crashing in the back yard. I love waking up in “my” cabin here, with the wind floating in off the lake and though my window and across my face. And the sound of waves lapping (or crashing on more windy days). It’s just got to be one of the most delicious feelings in the world. And in NZ, no less! And together with Jon! I love it for you guys! AND PENGUINS!!! :-) :-) :-) How cool!!! I know I’m using a lot of superlatives . . . but I’d say that was a pretty superlative day! :-) XOXOX

Beautiful lighthouse pic!! Totally picturesque! Couldn’t find the spot on our map, though. Was it cold there? I have a hard time figuring out what the temperature must be.

Does it feel weird to be so far south that all that’s left is Antarctica?

The photo is beautiful, and I found Nugget Point on the map. I like the “nuggets” lined up along the base of the hill. The fresh air must have been invigorating. Of course, you’re surrounded by fresh air in so many of the NZ places you’ve visited.

It was a pretty crazy feeling knowing when you look south there is just nothing in that direction. The weather was actually surprisingly warm (almost t-shirt weather).
